Big Brothers and Big Sisters are adult friends and role models for children who are in need of additional support and guidance. By reaching out to a child, you can make a meaningful connection that will make a difference in his or her life and in the community.

A "match" is made with a child based on a volunteer's and a child's needs, preferences, interests and hobbies. The program allows some flexibility regarding time commitment, but all community-based volunteers must meet the following minimum requirements:

Eighteen (18) years of age or older
Available to participate in activities with a child on a regular, consistent basis
Able to make a minimum one-year commitment once matched
Able to commit at least 3 – 5 hours of time every other week

School-Based Mentoring Program

What are you doing after school or on your lunch hour? Do you have one hour a week to make a big difference in the life of a child?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine is looking for caring adults and older youth to participate in an innovative school-based mentoring program. Become a friend to a child who needs your guidance — one hour a week throughout the school year is all it takes.

We'll match you with a child at an area school and provide training and ongoing support during the school year. All you need to do to qualify is complete an application and one-on-one interview with a program coordinator, and attend a brief training session. Personal references and background checks are also required for all applicants.
